Match Report
Sunday 2 June –v- Brasted Invicta at Chislehurst
An early rematch gave us ample chance to erase our opening day of the season defeat at Sutton Valence School. Having eleven players was also a bonus, though to describe them as fit and able would be stretching the point. As per norm Spud lost the toss and Brasted elected to bat.
That redoubtable combination of B'stard and Moyse were the architects of our oppo’s rather poor demise. Having laboured to make an initial breakthrough, against two openers intent on scavenging runs, the skip very soon found himself desperately seeking a bit bowler who would enable Brasted to reach a respectable total. Alas Brasted had their finger firmly on the self-destruct button and even no-hoper Jim helped himself to a brace of wickets. Chris, whose last four overs in competitive matches were despatch for 56 runs, retrieved a little self-esteem with a three over spell that yielded a wicket for only a single run. Our other main contributor was Ian Browne, with a devastating seven ball stint that bagged him two wickets. Eventually Brasted were all out for 70 which with our showings of late could well have been 60 runs too many. A spiffing tea from the Braithwaite/Browne kitchens was well and truly scoffed and volunteers for the openers spot were desperately sought. Amid much chuckling John and Darkie joined umpires Timms and Schultz at the middle. Mark was in typically belligerent mood attempting to take the attack apart. Despite losing John and Graham cheaply, few could have anticipated the magnitude of our middle order collapse after Nath had helped Mark take the score to 49 before being bowled for 14. At 61 Mark was bowled by a prostrate John Mayes, who then played havoc, taking three more wickets in his next over. All this action left us still seven runs shy of the target and sent a showering Steve Martin hurrying for his pads. A semblance of order was recouped by some sensible play from Ian and Daz to scrape us home by two wickets.
Some justification was found for the dramatic tumbling of wickets by the arrival of Mayes at the bar to buy a five wicket jug. The desperate skip searched for something positives to say about our display but once again the batting display was in general a poor reflection of our powers of concentration and responsibility. He went home early.
Pen Pics
Mark P -Got the strop when Nobbie Mayes bowled him and threatened to stomp off home to sulk -top scored with 37
John B -Found plenty to laugh about in this performance.
Graham R -Rumoured to have taken a catch -it wasn’t off the skips bowling
Kev G -Fielding saved us countless runs – as good as ever CRAP!!
Nathan P -Second top score with 14.Silly haircut.Jims brother-in-law -enough said.
Chris W -Likened to Mark Baker after several unplayable deliveries -Baker is not R and Slow though
Jim C -Dropped five catches in a row passing the ball back to the bowler and that was all that was report worthy.
Ian B -Hit all important four to tie the scores - another impressive bowling spell
Daz M -Suddenly started bowling fast after the threat of a rest from the skip -had notion that he was a swing bowler - needed a slapping to sort himself out.
Steve M -Set up victory with fine spell of dull medium pace accurate stuff then almost had to rescue defeat from the jaws of victory.
