Match Report

Sunday 4 August -v- Knights at The Willows
After last seasons inaugural fixture we knew the strength of Knights batting line-up and realised we would be hard pressed to achieve a positive result. The additional absence of Ninja Turtle Browne, recovering from Pizza withdrawal, further jeopardized our hopes of victory.
Basically we were taught a stern lesson in playing straight and hitting the ball extremely hard. Nobody bowled any worse than usual, with only Daz and B'Stard emerging with any credit or wickets; we simply met batting of a standard we do not regularly encounter. In attempting to vary the attack, the skip achieved little except rapid acceleration to the scoring rate. With ample punishment meted out, Knights declared at a generous 214-2, with bats 3 and 4 reaching 50 and 100 respectively. Theoretically this gave us 50 overs or so to casually accumulate the runs for a run of the mill victory.
As with all the best laid theories, we soon stumbled across a basic problem; that being an inability to score lots of runs without losing lots of wickets. Despite several potential partnerships and some honest endeavour, we never really threatened anything more than a modest response. Daz proved (if it needed further proof) what a dull and dreary bat he is with a painstaking 70 that provided what little-backbone there was to our innings Hopes of an Edenbridge style draw, when Spud joined Chris at the wicket, evaporated through a brilliant catch that prevented Fats overhauling his club high of 9.
Darkie took a dislike to their skip (something to do with him being quite good at the game). We assembled at the Bull and set our minds on Tuesday’s game with Greenwich Leisure.
