Match Report

Tuesday 1 July –v- One More On Top at Sutcliffe Park

With GT, Jim and Gord missing, the Midweek XI gave debuts to Paul Cook, Adam Back and Julian Foster for the game against the Bus Garage. One More on Top won the toss and elected to bat, a decision presumably influenced by both teams only having eight players present at the start time rather than the condition of the pitch. OMOT made their intentions clear from the off, with their Pakistani opener taking a particular liking to Moysey, carting him all round the park. After two overs of carnage that yielded 22 runs, from shots that included a glorious Cover Drive an immaculate Straight Drive and a sublime Late Cut, Spud had seen enough; assuming that the batsmen was still getting his eye in, two more overs from Moysey would probably have cost another 40 runs. With a forlorn Moysey grazing the outfield like a forgotten Sheep, Stevie Lew found the control and economy that Spud was looking for, removing the ‘Thorn in our Side’ in his first over. Spud ripped through the remainder of OMOT returning figures of 4-1 - including a Child Prodigy - as twenty-three for no wicket rapidly dissipated to 35 all out (7 wkts).
Tubby Clark gave the oppo some hope, when he managed to scoop a ball that had bounced twice straight to cover, but this only accelerated the arrival of Cook at the crease. While Chris was happy to practice his new high bat lift batting technique, Paul supplied the runs. Gaining in confidence the longer he was in, Paul played some aggressive shots in a fine unbeaten 24, while Chris managed to get himself out with just two runs required to give Julian the opportunity to lean on his bat.
